Bertha Benz was a strong-willed, brave woman who left an enduring mark on the world of automobiles. Born in 1849 in Pforzheim, Germany, she married Karl Benz in 1872 and had five children. She was a gifted businesswoman with a passion for technology, and she used her knowledge to help push her husband's invention—the world's first practical automobile—forward.
In 1888, when Karl was struggling to perfect his automobile and was short on funds, Bertha decided to take matters into her own hands. She convinced her husband to let her take the car on a surprise road-trip from Mannheim to Pforzheim— a distance of over 100 km—so that she could demonstrate its reliability. On the journey, she had to use her own resources to repair parts of the car and purchase fuel. Despite the heat, the long hours, and a few unexpected breakdowns, she eventually made it to her destination, making Karl's invention the world's first successful road trip.
Not only did she prove that a gasoline-powered car was capable of extended distances, but she also proved that other women could and should be involved in automobiles. She quickly became a revered woman in the history of cars and was the first advocate for equal rights for women in the automobile industry. And, after her journey, the sales of Karl's cars shot up, proving that Bertha had been successful in her mission.
Bertha Benz's road trip was a turning point in the history of automobiles, and it continues to be remembered today. She stands as an inspiration for all women and a reminder of the power of great minds, hard work, and above all else, courage.
